Gemini Becomes the Agent: Google Moves the Center of Gravity from Models to Governed Work

Google's Gemini at Work announcements put one agent, called Gemini, behind every surface a company uses. The agent is meant to be given an outcome rather than instructions, and to return finished work, running across a company's tools and systems for hours or days when the job needs it. Google also separated the agent from the model running underneath, so Gemini can hand a step to Anthropic's Claude when Claude is better suited, with other private and open models to follow. Google is competing on identity, policy, memory, and cost control, and treating the model as a part it is prepared to source from a rival.

Techaisle Insight, October 2026. Gemini Becomes the Agent: Google Moves the Center of Gravity from Models to Governed Work. Diagram showing four stacked layers labeled Identity, Policy, Memory and Cost control above a model slot, where Gemini connects to Claude and to other models planned for the future.

For firms with 1 to 10,000 employees, the market Techaisle tracks, model quality is rarely what holds agents back. The harder questions are whether agents stay affordable once usage scales, whether the CISO will let them run, and who will operate them, and Google's launch speaks to those more directly than its enterprise customer stories suggest.

Lock-in moves from the model to the context

Model leadership changes hands several times a year, and few customers want to rebuild their agents each time it does. Gemini's model choice addresses that risk: the agent picks the model for each step, today from Google's own Gemini family or Anthropic's Claude, with other models to follow. Google owns one of the best model families and still built Gemini so customers can choose another. That is a confident bet on the agent, and it works because the switching cost has moved to what the agent knows.

Google is connecting Gemini to its Knowledge Catalog, an existing Google Cloud service, so that every agent works from the company's own business definitions. The catalog holds one agreed definition for each business term and reads metrics from the systems where the company already maintains them. Gemini's memory runs from the task at hand to a record of how the organization does its work, and the agent writes some of its own skills as it goes. After a year of use, that body of definitions, history, and skills is far harder to move than a model is to swap.

Google Cloud's AI Innovations: Transforming Customer Experiences and Driving Business Growth

On 24th September 2024, Google Cloud unveiled several significant updates to its AI offerings. These updates include enhancements to the Gemini model, including the general availability of a two million token context window for Gemini 1.5 Pro, improvements in provisioned throughput, advancements in grounding capabilities, and the general availability of the Imagen 3 text-to-image generation model. These new product announcements from Google Cloud highlight its commitment to advancing AI technologies and providing businesses with the tools they need to drive innovation and growth. With these new features, Google Cloud further solidifies its position as a leader in AI development.

Google also discussed the evolution of its agents, highlighting how they have become increasingly sophisticated and capable over time. As AI technology has advanced, Google's agents have evolved from simple chatbots to intelligent assistants that can perform complex tasks and provide valuable insights. Cloud agents are intelligent software applications that can perform tasks autonomously or in collaboration with humans. They leverage artificial intelligence and machine learning to automate processes, analyze data, and provide insights. Google Cloud has released a variety of agents, including customer agents, employee agents, data agents, security agents, and creative agents. These agents offer numerous benefits, such as increased efficiency, improved decision-making, enhanced customer satisfaction, and reduced operational costs. Google Cloud agents differentiate themselves by integrating with Google's AI platform, Vertex AI, which simplifies development and deployment. Additionally, Google Cloud's agents are designed to be scalable, reliable, and secure, ensuring that businesses can leverage AI to meet their evolving needs.

Gemini Updates and Expanded Capabilities

Updates to the Gemini Model: One of the event's key highlights was the announcement of updates to the Gemini model. The Gemini model, known for its powerful generative AI capabilities, has been further enhanced to provide even more robust performance. The updates to the Gemini Model, specifically the introduction of the Gemini 002 version, bring several advantages for customers. The new version is available in both Flash and Pro versions. The Flash version is designed for speed and versatility, making it suitable for a wide range of applications. On the other hand, the Pro version offers incremental reasoning capabilities, which can be particularly beneficial for more complex tasks that require deeper analysis and understanding. The context window for Gemini 1.5 Pro has also been expanded to 2 million tokens. This significant increase allows for analyzing larger amounts of data in a single prompt, such as two hours of video or 1500 pages of text. This capability enables customers to process and analyze extensive datasets more efficiently, leading to more comprehensive insights and better decision-making.

Google Workspace Ups the Game: AI Focus Targets SMBs and Mid-Market Growth

While Google Cloud Next offered a flurry of AI announcements, Google Workspace emerged as the surprise star, particularly for small and mid-sized businesses (SMBs) and midmarket firms. Google Workspace stole the show for SMBs. Here's what grabbed my attention:

  • Video Made Easy with Google Vids: Powered by Google’s AI technology Gemini, Google Vids is a game-changer for SMBs in creating professional videos. Imagine a Recording Studio experience with a massive library of stock footage, music, and GIFs at your fingertips. AI-powered editing removes unwanted noise, ensuring pristine audio quality. Seamless video sharing and collaboration within Workspace eliminate email ping-pong, empowering teams to work together securely.
  • Vertex AI Meets Workspace: This integration unlocks a treasure trove of possibilities for SMBs. With over 130 pre-built AI foundation models, SMBs can build custom solutions to automate complex workflows, which translates to significant time savings, improved access to relevant data, and a productive workforce. This means more time for strategic planning and less time spent on repetitive tasks, enhancing accessibility to pertinent data and improving the employee experience. The integration equips SMBs to take control of their workflows and focus on what matters.
  • Supercharge Meetings with the Gemini Meet Add-on: For $10 per user per month, the meeting experience can be elevated with features like "Take Notes for Me," "Translate for Me" (supporting 69 languages!), and studio-quality audio and video. Plus, adaptive audio ensures clear communication even in impromptu laptop-based meetings. This add-on is perfect for space-constrained SMBs and is a significant productivity booster.
  • AI Boosts Chat Productivity: Gemini in Chat is an intelligent sidekick. Gemini is there whether one needs answers from across the web, summaries of lengthy documents, or a helping hand sorting through emails and chats. It even helps craft the perfect tone for messages and prioritizes conversations based on the most frequent contacts and urgent tasks. And for those quick collaborations, Huddles in Chat offers a one-click meeting experience. Did I mention interoperability with Slack and Teams, allowing for effortless collaboration across different messaging services?
  • Enhanced Security with the New Gemini Security Add-on: For an additional $10 per user per month, businesses can bolster their Workspace security with advanced AI features. These include data classification and integrate seamlessly with existing Data Loss Prevention (DLP) controls. Additionally, privacy-preserving customer-specific AI models provide an extra layer of protection for sensitive data.

According to Techaisle's survey data of more than 2100 SMBs, one of the top five priorities for 2024 is to enhance and invest in collaboration solutions, and 87% plan to increase usage in 2024. Implementing a uniform collaboration solution that can function smoothly on all employee devices is also a challenge for 24% of SMBs.
