The data contained in Techaisle’s recent detailed survey, US SMB & Midmarket SaaS Adoption Trends, covering over 2500 responses, with a margin of error of +/- 1.94% at 95% confidence level, paints a fascinating picture of the sea change that is occurring within SMBs, and which is reflected in SaaS adoption patterns.

The view of SaaS as a deepening force within the SMB market raises an important, related question: what is the current benchmark for SaaS within SMBs? How many SaaS applications are in use today? And how many new applications are expected to be added?

SaaS is transforming SMBs. SMB IT transformation, from technology-focused to business outcome-focused. From the view of technologists, this could be described as a shift from hardware to SaaS – from an environment where asset management entailed procuring, configuring, deploying and maintaining hardware, to an environment where assets are no longer defined by boxes but instead by a portfolio of functionality, and where adroit management is focused on adding cloud-based capabilities (delivered via SaaS) to drive better productivity, market reach, revenue and productivity.

The report at a minimum covers the following:

  • SaaS accelerating SMB digitization
  • Core and non-core use of SaaS applciations
  • SMB & Midmarket SaaS adoption & growth
  • Current & planned Cloud CRM journey
  • Current & planned Cloud ERP journey
  • SaaS adoption by task focus
  • Challenges in accelerating SaaS adoption
  • Marketing SaaS to SMBs

A total of 2542 SMBs were contacted for the survey. A 25 minute questionnaire was administered to each respondent. Respondents were IT and Business decision makers.Sampling quota was fixed by employee size categories: 1-9, 10-19, 20-49, 50-99, 100-249, 250-499, 500-999.

In addition, respondent organizations were specifically screened for:

  1. Currently using cloud CRM,
  2. Currently using cloud ERP
  3. Not using but planning to use cloud CRM
  4. Not using but planning to use cloud ERP

Objective for the above sub-sampling screening was to specifically understand their respective cloud CRM and cloud ERP journey of adopting adjacent SaaS applications
